The road to 6G – what will the next network generation bring?

While 5G networks are still being rolled out around the world, researchers and industry are already working on the next generation. 6G promises not only faster mobile internet, but also a digital infrastructure that will more closely connect the physical and digital worlds.

Mobile network generations change roughly every decade, and the development cycle begins well before commercial launch. In the case of 6G, research has been ongoing for years, and international standardization work is entering an increasingly intensive phase. The first commercial networks are expected to appear in the early 2030s.

One of the most important innovations of 6G is that the network no longer just transmits data, but also senses its environment. Through so-called integrated communication and sensing, the network may be able to recognize the position, movement, or even environmental characteristics of objects. This opens up new possibilities for autonomous vehicles, industrial automation, and smart city systems.

The next generation is also closely intertwined with artificial intelligence. In 6G networks, artificial intelligence is no longer an additional function, but an integral part of the operation: it helps optimize resources, predict errors, and allow the network to adapt independently to changing needs.

6G could also bring significant improvements in speed and response time, enabling a wider range of real-time applications such as telesurgery, augmented and virtual reality, and digital twins. By linking terrestrial networks with satellite systems, coverage could be extended to areas where reliable connectivity is not yet available today. Sustainability is also a key consideration: the aim is to ensure that increasing data traffic does not lead to a proportional increase in energy consumption.
